Fanny Brice, the main character, is not meant to be "pretty," yet she emanates a dazzling beauty. Everything about her—her voice, her comedic ways, her elegant charms, her elegant hands, and her eyes that penetrate with burning stares through the soul—is the stuff of the greats.
Her story starts in her irrepressible young days on New York's Lower East Side, where the stage-struck teenager feels her way through burlesque and vaudeville. Fanny is a bright one; she sings expertly, has high ideals, and knows she can succeed despite the doubts of her loved ones.
After meeting Nick Arnstein, a attractive and charming gambler with a softer side, Fanny's heart is immediately taken. The only problem is that Nick doesn't recognize how she feels and is always disappearing on presumed "business" trips.
After a vehement encounter in Baltimore, Nick and Fanny readily admit their feelings for one another, and Fanny bravely decides to follow Nick across the ocean. After Nick wins a bankroll, the couple gets married. But as with all good things, Fanny has to choose between her husband, who is growing increasingly mistrustful of her success in show business, and her wonderful career as an entertainer.
