The Story of Some Like It Hot
The show goes back to in the early 1930s just ahead of the end of the Prohibition era. Two male jazz musicians, Joe and Jerry, spot a mobster commit a crime at the Speakeasy where they’re working. Rather than allow the mobster to try to kill them, the musicians go on the run.
They put on women’s clothing and join a touring all-female swing big band. While touring, the two fall for the band’s singer, Sugar Kane. They must keep their true identities protected, but they both hope to fall in love with Sugar Kane.
As the group tours, engagements form that could serve to expose Joe and Jerry as men. The gangsters and the FBI become involved, realizing Jerry and Joe from their tap-dancing routines. Which further complicating the groups touring to performances and its ability to find new investors.
Jerry, who now must pass off as Daphne, falls in love with one of the investors, leading to an engagement. Eventually, everyones real identity becomes known, but that doesn't change their feelings for each other. As Prohibition expires, everyone is able to move on with their new lives.
Origins
This entrancing musical comedy was written in 2022 with Marc Shaiman’s music and lyrics, Scott Wittman’s lyrics, and Matthew López and Amber Ruffin’s book. It received 13 nominations for the 76th Tony Awards. It also won Best Costumes and Best Choreography, meaning you’ll appreciate the visual portions of the show as much as the emotional music and lyrics. It features exquisite tap-dancing numbers, too.
This Broadway Show follows the entertaining story told in the 1959 movie. The film starred the beautiful Marilyn Monroe, making it highly popular at the time and for generations that followed. The new musical retells this cherished story from the movie with a twist while protecting the vintage comedy and musical styles from the movie.
History
