Shakespeare’s original play has long been known as one of the most tragic stories of all time, with the central characters' zealous devotion for each other resulting in their choice to commit suicide. Making use of Shakespeare and his wife as characters in the play itself though, Broadway's fresh show, & Juliet, tweaks the previous story by allowing Juliet to discover what life has to offer after the death of her true love and giving her a chance to redefine herself. Wishing to escape Verona with her equally-resolved friends, the characters are opened up to an unknown way of life beyond what Juliet and her friends were ready for after they arrive in Paris, France.
Having been produced four centuries after the original, the musical also presents itself with implementation that appeals to a younger audience. To present its point across to the audience, the play uses a set of songs from pop music’s best hitmaker, Max Martin. The Swedish songwriter and producer earlier on had intentions of immortalizing his songs through theater as well, which prompted ‘& Juliet’ being created and later on debuting in 2019.
