Set side by side with the original known story of Shakespeare's creation which was shown on stage approximately forty decades ago, fans have noted the many changes that were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern musical based on the same lead character. Shakespeare’s original story centers around the tragedy that occurs because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the poisoning of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic events and instead chooses a more positive outlook by focusing on the boundless possibilities of life, even after such traumatic experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new productionl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her gang of friends, who make a trip to Paris to find their identities not just as individuals, but as remarkable women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist view through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes command of her husband’s account and alters the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a chance to shine, while introducing new and equally capable women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the production is able to incorporate popular culture, specifically songs from recent years, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the women throughout the show. Even the clothing worn by the production’s leading characters give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while emphasizing the contrast between the new production and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan fashion and iconography with today’s fashion styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to promote empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
This May’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it come to Iowa, where Des Moines's Des Moines Civic Center is proud to feature this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Thursday 8th May 2025.
