Production writer Lin-Manuel Miranda, fresh off his success from his previous Broadway show, In the Heights, conceptualized Hamilton for a number of years before it debuted in the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2015. It was in this opening that Miranda also portrayed the lead role. The entirety of the production, including its amazing cast and incredible music received highly regarded feedback from both critics and the audiences alike.
The Musical, as most know, is a historical story based off one of Americas Founding Fathers, but Hamilton takes a contemporary and forward-thinking approach, as seen in the music styles chosen and more so in its multicultural cast. Plus, the 2016 Tony Awards, where the production collected 11 out of 16 nominations, is a display of its success. Hamilton’s original cast was made up of the actors and actresses, Philippa Soo, Leslie Odom Jr., and Jonathan Groff. Individually, the cast was already filled with both notable nominees and previous award winners, but their wide range and memorable performances combined brought Hamilton to a brand-new level. The creative team, just as incredibly talented, won Tony Awards for Hamilton. Thomas Kail for Best Direction, Andy Blankenbuehler for Best Choreography, Alex Lacamoire for Best Orchestrations, Howell Binkley for Best Lighting Design of a Musical, Paul Tazewell for Best Costume Design of a Musical, and of course the man himself Lin-Manuel Miranda for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical, all topped the 2016 Tony Awards. Additionally, and unsurprisingly, Hamilton also snatched Best Musical for 2016. The current cast and production crew in each new location where the production is on tour brings the same energy and enthusiasm in their performances, with overwhelming positive reviews posted consistently.
Hamilton’s global rise to fame led to opening many doors worldwide for audiences to experience Hamilton. It has continued for the past decade to perform not just in the United States, but also on London’s West End and in numerous venues across Asia. The Musical’s limited season will be arriving in Des Moines throughout June (and on Friday 13th June 2025) at Des Moines Civic Center, selling out at one more world-class stage with the premier facilities and sound engineering that rivals even Broadway and West End theaters.
