A tale of two falling in unlikely love, Moulin Rouge! The Musical recounts to us a devoted but difficult love story in the equally passionate city of Paris, France. In the districts of Montmartre, Christian, a passionate composer who arrives in Montmartre with an aim to succeed in writing, meets the would-be love of his life and club entertainer, Satine, in the famous club Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine then start to have romantic encounters, but in secret, as another wealthy benefactor sets his eyes on Satine as his muse.
Created as an offshoot that was staged more than a decade after the original film, Moulin Rouge! The Musical’s first hurdle was to present an unfamiliar setting to a new generation. The genius stroke of the team, just like the 2001 motion picture, was to share the secret romantic affair with alternate and fresh renditions of anachronistic pop songs. The obvious solution was to supersize the musical numbers and truly turn the show into a “a modern retelling of Moulin Rouge”, as the creators refer to it. The outcome, as viewed on the Broadway stage, was a melting pot of second to none medleys, mash-ups, and numbers. Though the show stays true to many of the original picture's favorite songs including Lady Marmalade, Moulin Rouge now performs current songs from the current times including Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance, Beyonce’s Single Ladies, and Britney Spears’ Toxic performed in unique arrangements.
